As a photographer, designer or creator you regularly share visual content online. Without a watermark it is difficult to prove you are the creator, and others can take your work as if it were their own. A watermark provides visible protection.
What is a watermark?
A watermark is a visible mark — text or logo — placed over an image. It serves two purposes:
1. Ownership claim: it shows who the creator or rights holder is.
2. Deterrence: it makes it less attractive to steal the image, because the thief also takes your name along.
When do you use a watermark?
- Preview images you send to potential clients (e.g. a photo selection)
- Portfolio images on your website or social media
- Stock photos or saleable visual content
- Product designs you share for feedback but do not yet want to publish
When do you not use a watermark?
When you have already sold the image, deliver it to a client, or use it in a private context. A watermark on a wedding photo you give to the couple is unprofessional.
How do you make a good watermark?
1. Go to the watermark tool.
2. Drag your image here.
3. Type your name, company name or website URL as watermark text.
4. Set the transparency to 30-50% — visible enough to read, but not so distracting that it dominates the photo.
5. Download the image.
Tips for an effective watermark
- Use your full name or website, not just an initial. That makes it traceable.
- A diagonal watermark across the entire image is harder to remove than a small corner watermark.
- Choose a colour that contrasts with the image. White works on a dark photo, dark grey works on a light photo.
- Do not make it larger than necessary — it should not make the image unreadable.
Can a watermark be removed?
Yes, with editing software and some effort. A diagonal watermark covering the entire image is harder to remove than a small corner logo. For maximum protection you can also keep the resolution of the preview version low.
Frequently asked questions
Is a watermark legally binding?
No, but it helps in proving copyright. Your name in the EXIF data (camera information) plus a watermark together give the strongest claim.
What if I want a logo as a watermark?
The current tool only supports text watermarks. For a logo watermark use the add text tool with a transparent background.
