Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows or Mac

iPhone photos are HEIC by default. Not all apps can open that format. Here's how to convert them to JPG without installing software.

Since iOS 11, the iPhone saves photos as HEIC — an efficient format that works fine on Apple devices, but causes problems on Windows, older Android devices, and many websites.

Why HEIC and not JPG?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) uses the HEVC video codec to store images more compactly. A HEIC file at comparable quality is typically 40-50% smaller than a JPG. That saves storage space on your phone.

The downside: not everyone can open HEIC. Windows needs a separate extension, Google Photos converts automatically but may lose quality, and many web forms only accept JPG or PNG.

Method 1: PixRust (no software needed)

The fastest method without installation:

1. Go to the HEIC to JPG tool.

2. Drag your HEIC file(s) here.

3. Download the JPG version.

You can drag multiple files at once. They are each converted separately.

Method 2: Windows HEIC Image Extension

If you want to open HEIC files in Windows Photos without converting them first:

1. Go to the Microsoft Store.

2. Search for "HEIC Image Extension" (free, from Microsoft).

3. Install the extension.

After installation, Windows Photos opens HEIC files directly. You can also export them as JPG via "Save as".

Method 3: Set iPhone to save as JPG

Want to prevent the iPhone from saving as HEIC in the future?

1. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats.

2. Choose "Most Compatible" instead of "High Efficiency".

From now on the camera saves as JPG. Existing HEIC files are not converted.

Frequently asked questions

Is quality lost when converting HEIC to JPG?

There is a small quality difference because JPG is lossy. At normal settings the difference is not visible on a screen.

Can I also convert HEIC video (HEVC)?

No, this tool only converts HEIC photos. For HEVC video you need other software.

Does this also work on the iPhone itself?

Yes, PixRust works in Safari on iOS. You can select HEIC files from your photo library and download them as JPG.
