Make a profile picture for LinkedIn, Instagram and Teams

Every platform has its own size for profile pictures. Read the ideal dimensions and how to set them.

A good profile picture makes a first impression. But every platform uses different sizes, ratios and compression. This overview helps you look sharp on every platform.

All major platforms crop your photo into a circle. Always upload a square image for the best result.

Step by step: make a round profile picture

1. Use the circle crop profile picture tool.

2. Drag your portrait photo here.

3. Zoom and pan until the face sits nicely inside the circle.

4. Download as PNG (the corners are transparent).

The PNG can be uploaded directly to most platforms.

Tips for a good profile picture

  • Make sure the face takes up at least 60% of the frame.
  • Use a plain or non-distracting background.
  • Good lighting: light from the front, no harsh shadows.
  • Wear neutral clothing that does not distract from the face.
  • Smile: a friendly expression works better than a serious look.

Remove background for a professional look

Want a white or coloured background? Use the remove background tool before cropping. Click the background to make it transparent, save as PNG, and then crop to a circle.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my photo look blurry after uploading?

Platforms compress your photo heavily. Upload a larger image (at least 400×400, preferably 800×800) so there is still enough quality left after compression.

Should I upload a JPG or PNG?

PNG for platforms that support transparency, JPG if the background is white or coloured anyway. Most platforms compress to JPG so the end result is comparable.
