Frequently asked questions

Which format should I choose?

JPG for photos (smaller file, no transparency). PNG for images with transparency or sharp edges such as logos. WebP for the best balance on websites: smaller than JPG at equal quality, with transparency support.

Is PNG always larger than JPG?

For photos with lots of colour gradients JPG is smaller. For simple images with flat colours or text PNG can actually be smaller than JPG, because JPG introduces compression artefacts that take up more space.

What exactly is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format from Google that can work both lossily (like JPG) and losslessly (like PNG). It is on average 25-35% smaller than JPG at equal quality and supports transparency. All modern browsers open WebP.

Can I set the conversion quality?

Yes, for JPG and WebP a quality slider is available. PNG is always lossless so quality does not apply there.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your own browser. Your image never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, without watermark or account. The site is paid for by ads.

Why in the browser?

PixRust runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API and WebAssembly. Your image is never sent to a server — all processing happens locally on your device. This means your photos remain private by design, whether they are personal snapshots or confidential documents. There is no account required, no file size limit, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
